As American culture continues to center itself around convenience, the state of health in this country will continue to decline year after year. The majority of Americans make decisions based solely on utility and convenience. There are so many diet fads that are advertised in magazines, doctor’s offices, health food stores, book stores, even on t.v., etc. Majority of these weight loss programs are based on the American convenience philosophy, therefore, enabling you to have your cake and eat it too!! Diets such as the Atkins diet, Dr. Barry Sears’ Zone Diet, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Lean Cuisine, etc., are multiple examples of dieting with pleasure! These diet plans are attractive because of the emphasis placed on the palatable indulgence of eating lots of fat, animal proteins, and junk food.

 

You may experience more energy, weight loss, a better physique, changes in blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels, and other health benefits. However, these food sources do not remineralize, build, repair, regenerate, or nourish your blood and tissues. The ramifications of eating this way increases your chances of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, etc. Over time, your body will become deficient in vitamins and minerals, exhaust digestive and metabolic enzymes, destroy your intestinal environment, making your blood and tissues acidic, therefore, changing your internal environment into a toxic soup!

 

Are the short-term benefits of these weight loss programs worth the potential long-term dangers? When you talk to most physicians, trainers, or nutritionists, they will tell you that the key to sustained weight loss is a diet high in animal protein, moderate to low in carbs, and low in fat. So you begin to eat larger amounts of animal proteins in the form of dairy, chicken, red meat, and fish as the staple of your daily meals. Eating this way will lead to weight loss and lean muscle growth, albeit, what these health professionals are not telling you, is that, a nutrition plan high in animal proteins will lead you down the path towards disease and early aging.

You may be thinking: Well, I have been eating this way and I have seen results, therefore, if it is working, I am gonna keep doing it! Besides weight loss and increased muscle growth or strength/size, ask yourself this question: “Does this kind of eating regimen prevent disease? There are many physicians who specialize in nutrition science that will tell you that eating too much animal protein is toxic for the body and is leading to chronic diseases, i.e. Dr Hiromi Shinya, “The Enzyme Factor;” Dr Colin Campbell, “The China Study;” and Dr Fuhrman, “Eat to Live.” There is a clear connection that a nutrition lifestyle that has animal proteins as the staple food, increases the risk of disease, increased aging, and possibly early death.

So what are the dangers in consuming too much animal protein?

For starters, when you cook these animal foods, they lose their enzymes needed for proper digestion, therefore, animal proteins do not completely digest in your intestinal tract. As you continue to consume dairy and meat, the undigested food begins to accumulate in your colon and begins to decompose. This produces large amounts of toxins, such as, hydrogen sulfide, indole, methane gas, ammonia, histamine, and nitrosamine. In addition to these toxins, free radicals are produced. In order to detoxify these toxins, large amounts of enzymes are exhausted in the liver and intestines.

The amount of protein needed daily is about 1 gram per 2.2lbs of body weight. However, many people consume a lot more than that daily. Over consumption of animal protein will be excreted out of the body via urination, and causes much harm to the body. These excess proteins are converted into amino acids by digestive enzymes in the intestines and are broken down further by the liver before entering the bloodstream. This creates an acidic environment in the bloodstream, therefore, large amounts of calcium are drawn out of your bones and teeth to neutralize the acid. The calcium and oxidized food are then filtered through the kidneys, with the excess protein getting secreted, along with, water and calcium.

As you can see, eating excess animal protein, will eventually make your blood and tissues acidic, exhaust enzymes in the body, de-mineralize bones and teeth, create intestinal problems, increase toxicity, etc. Over time, this pathophysiology of eating this way, will more than likely lead to sickness, disease, or even possibly early death. We are seeing how cardio-vascular disease, diabetes, intestinal and reproductive cancers are all on the rise, and all of them are connected to a diet that consists of too much animal protein.

If you love eating meat and fish, then it is recommended that you consume no more than 4 to 6 ounces daily. Make sure that you are buying fresh wild caught fish and grass fed organic meats. You hear lots of discussion in the health industry about vitamin, mineral, and hormone deficiencies/imbalances, albeit, without amino acids, none of those just mentioned will function properly.

You probably already know that amino acids are the building blocks of protein and are necessary for the growth and reproduction of your cells. When your body is required to make something out of proteins, there are necessary amino acids needed in proper combination to carry out this metabolic function. Amino acids are combined into chains called peptides, and the peptide chains form protein molecules. Your organs, blood vessels, muscles, and other tissues, enzymes, various hormones, and neurotransmitters are made of specific combinations of amino acids, therefore, like enzymes, without them, life would cease to exist.

Amino acids come in three forms: D, DL, and L. The L-forms are the most easily absorbable and utilized by the body, whereas. the D-forms must first be converted by the body. Proteins, when it is digested properly, breaks down into amino acids that are ready for absorption. Then, the amino acids travel throughout the body to wherever they are needed. However, many of us do not eat the proper proteins, we have poor digestion, we destroy proteins by over-cooking our foods, or are enzyme-deficient, and any of these problems lead to amino acid deficiencies. In order for the body to utilize amino acids properly, there must also be sufficient vitamins, minerals, and enzymes in the body derived primarily from exogenous sources, like plant foods. All these nutrients work synergistically for proper metabolic functioning and proper repair or replacing of our cells/tissues.

To give you an illustration, the amino acid tryptophan must interact with vitamin C and B6, before it can be converted to serotonin, the neurotransmitter that relaxes you, guards against stress, and puts you to sleep at night. When you over-cook foods or smoke foods, or drink alcohol in excess, the tryptophan-serotonin pathway is blocked, and over time, results in the deficiency of one of the two or both. Many individuals today are experiencing extreme cases of depression, insomnia, anxiety, and panic attacks, and part of the reason could be derived from a poor nutrition program that leads to amino acid deficiency.

The average person goes to a doctor/psychiatrist and is prescribed anti-depressants, SSRI’s (Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitor’s), or other anti-anxiety medications that only adds to amino acid deficiency. Remember, drugs only treat symptoms and do not address the underlying causes. A word of caution: if you are currently taking any psychiatric medications, make sure you wean off of them under the guidance of a psychiatrist and do not take free form amino acid supplements, while you are on medication, because it can cause biochemical havoc in the body. For example, taking antidepressants or SSRI’s with the free form amino acid L-tryptophan, can create a serotonin overload leading to adverse side effects. There are reports that mixing psychiatric drugs with the supplement St. John’s Wart has caused side effects, even a few deaths, therefore, it cannot be emphasized enough to take caution when mixing prescription drugs and supplements. Make sure you speak to your physician before trying supplement therapy.

In any situation when you want to take amino acids (be sure you are weaned off of psych drugs first), have your physician run an amino acid and mineral profile to see if there are any deficiencies. Always use a combination of amino acids when taking them supplementally. Never take just one amino acid for a long period of time, i.e., more than two months, because this can cause a depletion of other amino acids. An amino acid supplement that is derived from natural sources and contains all 20 to 22 amino acids, along with fibroblast growth factor (works as an adaptogen), that places the amino acids where they need to be in the body, is called Laminine. The short-chain (oligopeptides) amino acids in the product, taken on an empty stomach, will be easily and quickly absorbed by the intestinal membranes, and enter the body, assisting in correcting the deficiencies. If this is not the case, then how come heart disease, autoimmune diseases, degenerative diseases, diabetes, and cancer are continuing to rise? If, we are making so-called progress in medicine. There are multiple theories in allopathic and naturopathic medicine that teach us what some of the underlying causes of diseases are. The former thinks that with drugs, technology, early screening, and surgery, will eventually help us overcome the plethora of diseases plaguing the world today. While the latter, seek to address the underlying causes of the diseased body via correcting all metabolic processes in the body, and supplying the body what it needs to heal itself.

You may be asking: What are some of the possible causes of disease?

First, habitual negative thinking creates metabolic imbalances in your body and creates negative cellular charges that can possibly damage your healthy cells, along with, cortisol elevations, and even the production of cellular acids. Second, environmental pollution via our water supplies, genetically modified food (processed foods), electromagnetic radiation, carbon emissions, nuclear wastes from warfare, etc. Third, lack of exercise that assists in resetting your metabolic clock and detoxification. The next question you may be asking: So how do I begin to balance my inner terrain?

First, begin drinking water on a daily basis, especially, electrically charged ionized water, like Kangen water. Without these nutrients, your cells, blood, and tissues will not repair themselves adequately, leading to DNA damage, protein damage, and overall cellular dysfunction. Fourth, eating raw nuts and seeds. Fifth, consuming legumes a few times a week will help with the prevention of intestinal diseases, and even reduce your chances of cardiovascular disease. Sixth, make sure you get a thorough blood panel done with your physician, to make sure your body is not deficient in any vitamins, minerals, etc. Also, get your hormone levels checked as well because hormone imbalances can lead to major psychological and physiological health problems. There are many reasons that lead to intestinal problems like eating too many enzyme deficient cooked foods, prolonged use of antibiotics and other pharmaceutical drugs, etc. I wanna spend a little time discussing the relationship between enzymes and digestion to give the reader a deeper understanding and why we need to be supplementing with plant based certified digestive enzymes and probiotics at each meal, i.e. Core Health Products.

The thermodynamics of food concern energy in the form of biochemical compounds. The original source of that energy is the sun, as its electromagnetic energy is trapped in natural chemicals (known as phytonutrients in plant food) during photosynthesis. The difference between “live” (raw) and “dead” (cooked) food is enzymatic activity. The enzymes found in raw food are released when we chew them in our mouth and actually aid in the digestion of that same food. The remaining 10% of the digestive enzymes from raw food, will assist our metabolic enzymes, helping to regenerate our blood, tissues, and organs. The enzymes inherent in raw food digest 50-75% of it themselves, without the help of enzymes secreted by the body.

So what causes over acidification in the body? For starters, the normal functions of the body have metabolic by products that are acid forming, therefore, without eating or drinking the body builds up acid waste. Without neutralizing this acidic waste and pushing it out of the body; the body cannot reach optimal health at the cellular level. There are lifestyle habits that create too much acidity in the body as well. The ORP (oxidation reduction potential) reading of Kangen water ranges between -200 to -800, while green tea has an ORP reading of -80. Oxidation stands for anything that has a positive reading on the ORP meter. You can test all tap, bottled, filtered, reverse osmosis, and distilled waters and they all have a positive ORP reading, therefore, not giving you any anti-oxidants for the body, and will have a pH that is acidic. Tap water will test neutral because of government standards but it is filled with harmful chemicals. A book titled, “Enzyme Therapy,” written by Drs. Wolfe and Ransberger state, “inflammation in its multitude of forms is perhaps the most general and fundamental reaction in all pathological processes.” Most allopathic and naturopathic physicians know the importance of addressing inflammation because without reducing or eliminating inflammation, any disease will not resolve itself. The fundamental difference between allopathic and naturopathic physicians in addressing inflammation, is that, the former treats it with drugs, while, the latter, treats it with foods, supplements, and a plethora of alternative therapies.

So what is inflammation? Any diagnoses you get from a physician ending in “itis” means you have inflammation going on in or outside your body. Whether you injure yourself physically, exercise, eat toxic food, drink toxic beverages, are exposed to toxic chemicals, get a bacterial infection, contract a viral infection, etc., there is a three-stage series of defense that starts: the reaction phase, the repair phase, and the regenerative phase. During the reaction phase, the body tries to isolate the damaged or infected tissue from spreading. This leads to heat, redness, pain, fever, swelling, edema, etc. All these just listed are symptoms of inflammation and the list goes on and on. In The News…Hazards of Tap & Bottled Water Page 3

A recent news report detailed a problem with chlorine that is being added into tap water. The report explained that chlorine, which is added to disinfect the water, creates chlorine by-products, such as THMs (Trihalomethanes), which are known carcinogens. In order to reduce the amount of THMs in the water, cities are now adding ammonia in addition to the chlorine, to create chloramines. Kidney dialysis patients and pregnant women are warned not to drink chloraminated water because of potential health risks.

Startling news was revealed on The Today Show in 2008. Matt Lauer interviewed Dr. Leo Trasand of Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Trasand issued a warning about the dangers of drinking some bottled water. The piece refers to the danger of chemical, Bisphenol A showing up in some plastic bottles. He is quoted, “Unfortunately there is no level of exposure that has been identified as being safe.” And he added, “Science suggests that there is a major concern here.” Regarding that chemical, Earth911 references an article from The Arizona Republic, “The chemical in question, Bisphenol A (BPA), has been linked to breast and uterine cancer, as well as decreased testosterone levels.

Dan Tessier, a Toxicologist made a statement in The Today Show piece, “The effects are primarily reproductive, and fertility effects on both male and female organisms.” Lauer added, “I think this is going to startle a lot of people. A Center for Disease Control Study detected BPA (Bisphenol A), in the urine of 95% of adults sampled. Scientists have measured BPA in the blood of pregnant women, umbilical cord blood and in the placentas all at levels demonstrated in animals to alter development.” class-action lawsuit, alleging that their town’

Val Wilson, 40, was pregnant four times between April 1994 and May 1997 with what would have been her first child. The baby was stillborn a few hours later. I was crushed.“

Annette Spaven, 40, thought her family was complete in early 1998; she had three children, the youngest of whom was five years old. When she discovered she was pregnant again, it was a surprise –but she and her husband quickly warmed to the idea of having another child. Spaven miscarried at ten weeks. “We were really disappointed, and a few months later we tried again.” By August she was pregnant, but she miscarried again at seven weeks.

Malithia Smith, 30, had had one successful pregnancy before suffering three miscarriages between May 1999 and May 2000. Each time, she began spotting at eight weeks, and each time, the doctor could not determine what had gone wrong. “The first time, I just thought, ‘These things happen,’” Smith remembers.

“The second time, it shook me up, and by the time I lost the third baby, I was really scared.“

The three had no idea what was causing their miscarriages. But ultimately, each of them gave birth to a healthy child after making one simple lifestyle change: They stopped drinking the tap water.

Many so called diet trends you find today in t.v. ads, magazines, and the medical community condemn the word “Fat!” People have become obsessed with “No Fat” diets thinking this is the key for weight loss and overall health. When you look at health from a cellular perspective, you realize that “Fat” should be a part of your intake of nutrients daily. The problem is not “Fat;” but the “Type of Fat” you consume on a daily basis. Let’s explore what fat is, good and bad sources of fat, lipids and cell membranes, and fatty acids and oxygen. Once you begin to understand the properties of “Fat” at the cellular level, you will come to the realization that our cells need it to stay healthy!

What is fat exactly? All fats are made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. You find the same elements in carbohydrates, albeit, they have different molecular structures. All forms of fat are based on the ratio between hydrogen and carbon. The two major groups of fat are: saturated and unsaturated fat (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated). You will find saturated fat mostly in animal proteins and dairy, and unsaturated fats primarily in vegetable oils. You have heard that eating saturated fat is bad, and eating polyunsaturated fat is good. This is false, what you need to avoid is overcooked polyunsaturated fats because they have been linked to cancer, heart disease, and problems with the reproductive organs. You need saturated and polyunsaturated fats, albeit, it’s the source of these fats that matter.

So what are good and bad sources of fat? Let’s begin with the bad: vegetable oils, processed oils and fats, and hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils. Products such as margarine, butter substitutes, vegetable shortening, and some vegetable oils are some examples of hydrogenated oils. The good sources are: nuts, seeds, sunflower oil, evening primrose oil, borage, flaxseed, coconut oil, grape seed oil, virgin olive oils, avocados, and avocado oil. Just make sure you buy virgin cold-pressed oils that are in a dark bottle, so that, it slows down the oxidation process.

The cell membranes in your body are primarily composed of lipids, called phospholipids and cholesterol. These lipids give structure and flexibility to your cell membranes and controls what comes in and out of your cells. There are a few different types of phospholipids in the cells and they are important because they wrap around nerve cells in the brain and nervous system, therefore, you need them for proper brain and nerve function. Cholesterol is another important lipid because it keeps the structure of the membranes intact. Cholesterol also helps with the proper functioning of the endocrine system, therefore, helping to keep hormones balanced in the body. Without good sources of fat in your daily nutrition program, your cells become toxic, hypoxic (lack of oxygen), and deficient in fat soluble vitamins A,D, E, and K. This can also lead to neurological disorders and an overall reduction in cognitive function over time. Consuming bad fats mentioned above in genetically modified meats, junk food, fried food, and baked goods can lead to the problems just mentioned.

In order for your body to have increased levels of oxygen, you need to consume the right ratios of “Essential Fatty Acids” aka “Omega Fats 3, 6, and 9.
